The Traffic Operations Bureau is seeking a motivated, dynamic individual to serve as the Department’s Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Engineer. The ITS Engineer supports the Iowa DOT’s mission by leading the planning, programming, deployment, maintenance and advancement of transportation technologies, including fiber optic communications, cameras, traffic sensors and probe data, dynamic messages signs, automated queue warning, intelligent work zones, advanced traffic management systems, driver information systems and other cutting-edge technologies.

As the Intelligent Transportation Systems Engineer, you will spend much of your time managing ITS projects and the ITS plan. This includes project development, design, review, consultant coordination, and working with District Staff on ITS projects and leading staff members from all divisions to develop a plan and organizational structure to program ITS projects. Duties also include coordination of assistance from consultants, writing reports, and making Commission and key staff presentations.
You will be responsible for evaluating ITS technologies, ITS concepts, and determining the benefits and costs of various technologies, as well as make recommendations to Management for the projects and/or systems that will significantly improve the efficiency or safety of Iowa's existing roadway system.
You will serve as the Highway Division's focal point for ITS information and ITS activities, promote the use of ITS technologies for urban and rural applications, as well as coordinate ITS activities with appropriate stakeholders to include other departments of transportation, federal highway administration, local and state law enforcement, local traffic engineering professionals, etc.
This position also includes opportunities for continuous learning and peer exchange through regional and national professional organizations.
The classification for this position is Transportation Engineer Specialist
Licensed as a professional engineer, and the equivalent of two years of full-time licensed professional transportation or related civil engineering experience. Must have, or prior to appointment, must obtain an active Iowa professional engineering license through the Iowa Professional Licensing Bureau – Engineering and Land Surveying Examination Board;
a Masters degree in chemical, civil, construction, environmental, materials, structural, or transportation engineering; engineering management; or an area closely related to transportation engineering may be substituted for one year of the required experience;
employees with current continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes experience equal to twelve months of full-time experience as a Transportation Engineer.
