We are seeking a Project Director to join our team. This position has the flexibility to be based out of any of our North American Offices.
This is a rare career opportunity to take a leadership role in major North American Infrastructure projects including bridges, roadways, water and wastewater tunnels, transit systems and ports.. As a member of our dynamic senior Project Management Team, you will manage multidisciplinary mega design projects valued over USD $1 Billion utilizing, best practices in project management quality and safety processes. The Project Director is responsible for all aspects of the project – including, budget, schedule, quality and safety.
In addition, you will be responsible for managing projects with respect to the project specific top and bottom line targets, quality, and client/staff satisfaction. You will have joint responsibility with Corporate Management Team for achieving the market goals (top line) for the North American Bridge market.
Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Plans, manages and delivers the designs of multi-disciplinary mega projects on-time, within budget, excellent quality and to the satisfaction of the client;
Sets priorities, secures resources and obtains commitment to work according to the project plan with the project management team and project leads;
Consistently maintains an overall view for the progress of the assigned project(s);
Oversees the Project teams and supports with the right resources, competencies and tools;
Ensures the achievement of product quality, project targets, budget control and project profitability over the project portfolio;
Communicates effectively with clients to identify needs and evaluate alternative business solutions and strategies.
Coordinates staffing for all projects in own portfolio with relevant VPs and staff managers;
Manages financial performance of the projects and portfolio;
Attracts, mentors and retains key staff;
Leads teaming and pursuits for major multidisciplinary infrastructure projects;
Maximizes distributed engineering in order to meet budget/time/quality goals; and
Generates additional work within the portfolio to the overall benefit for COWI NA, BTM and the COWI Group.
Client Relations & Market
Acts as Key Account Manager for major customers and provides management support to other Key Account Managers (Key Major Project Customers);
Develops and nurtures key client relationships and is the primary company contact on the project;
Identifies and markets additional business opportunities with key clients;
Develops market strategies in close cooperation with Market Director VP, and other members of the Corporate Management Team;
Liaises with other BTM/COWI units in identifying project opportunities; and
Performs other duties as assigned from time to time.
Effectively manage projects valued at over $1 billion
Employ the company's Project Management Process in execution of capital projects
Provide strategic direction and lead multi-discipline project management teams, including company and contract personnel, in resolution of technical and commercial issues
Lead definition of project objectives, scope development, and front end engineering in support of the project objectives
Proactively identify and resolve technical and commercial issues, ensure safety and quality objectives are clearly communicated, and drive performance in meeting project engineering and construction milestones
Analyze and manage risk on projects
Prepare and implement project execution plans
Develop cost effective contracting strategies
Accountable for project cost and schedule controls, project reporting
Routinely prepare and present project updates to senior management

Qualifications and Skills
20+ years of overall experience with 10+ years of prior experience working in the Civil Engineering/Construction industry as a Project Director managing large capital infrastructure design-build or P3 projects $750M+
Prior experience using alternative delivery methods including design-build, progressive design-build, construction management at risk and preferably past experience in various forms of public-private partnerships
Engineering degree with post graduate degrees preferred in engineering or professional disciplines
Ability to gather information and develop a thorough understanding of the project, while leading a diverse cross-functional team is essential
Ability to work with minimal supervision and effectively handle multiple projects and/or changing priorities
Strong business acumen coupled with solid technical skills in managing large transportation projects including leading and mentoring teams
Strong project management skills and the ability to see projects through from concept to completion within a professional services environment
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, demonstrated problem solving and decision making skills
Ability and willingness to travel up to 20% time; ability to temporarily relocate for projects
Ability to demonstrate strong personal initiative, a sound planning and problem solving capacity, and effective interpersonal skills
Proven experience anticipating internal and or external business challenges and/or regulatory issues
PE and/or PMP Certification a plus
Experience in transportation infrastructure including bridge, tunnel and marine disciplines preferred
International project management experience a major plus
